Lake Lyantonde Conservation and Tourism is a project of the Kabata farmers group, promoting community development through environmental protection.

Our activities are:

  • to preserve existing forest patches surrounding Lake Lyantonde
  • reforesting cleared areas
  • educating crater lake users.

Location

Lake Lyantonde, located 26 km from Fort Portal on the Kasenda Road, is one of the many volcanic crater lakes nestled amongst the steep hills and scattered forest patches of South-western Uganda.

Panoramic views of the Rwenzori Mountains make it an ideal spot in which to relax and appreciate the outstanding beauty of the area.

Accommodation

The project offers simple campsites at the tops of the slopes surrounding the lake.

Activities

Enjoy relaxing days swimming and test your fishing skills against those of the local children. For an evening’s entertainment, “African style”, we can arrange a meal in a member’s house after which the whole family will be happy to show off their dancing and singing talents. (Pre-booking is necessary.)

Attractions

  • Mahoma River Waterfalls: Guided walks through scenic pastoral and agricultural landscapes to the falls within an isolated forest patch.
  • Mwitampungu Valley: Features the interesting geologic feature the explosion crater known locally as “Ekina”

AII walks are booked at Lake Lyantonde project office at 2, 000/= per person  (+-$2.00)

Access

To reach Lake Lyantonde get a taxi at the stage at Mpanga Market. Ask to be dropped at the junction of Kabata and Lake Lyantonde. From here follow the right fork (sign posted) along a footpath to the lake and project office.
